Dr Anthony Fauci told CNN that new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for those vaccinated should be expected ‘fairly soon’.
The White House’s chief medical adviser said on Tuesday that he would soon expect less strict guidance, given the progress made with the US vaccination program.
This update should ‘ease the weakening of the recommendations’, especially for people in the same family who have been vaccinated.
Fauci is not in control of the CDC, but has long been at the heart of the federal response to the pandemic.
It is unclear what the timeline for new rules may be.
The clue about the upcoming lead came Tuesday in Fauci’s appearance on CNN’s “New Day.”
Asked by host Alisyn Camerota whether people who need to be fully vaccinated can come together within their family, Fauci said he would be personally comfortable with the idea.
Fauci had many discussions about this, some of which ‘were not very comfortable’, he said.
He said his position was: ‘If I am fully vaccinated, and my daughter enters the house, and she is fully vaccinated, we really need to have the strict public health measure that we would do if it were a stranger who was not vaccinated? “
Fauci said it was ‘common sense’ that ‘you should not be so strict in your social health measures’ once vaccines are part of the picture.
But the CDC wants to “sit down, talk about it, look at the data and then come up with a science-based recommendation,” Fauci was quoted as saying by CNN.
Fauci said Monday people who have been fully vaccinated should not yet eat indoors or go to the theater.
On the same day, New York Governor Andy Cuomo said theaters in the state would open in March. Fauci said a better strategy would be to wait until the fall when more people are vaccinated.
The CDC has already begun to relax some rules for people who have been fully vaccinated. On February 11, the agency said that people who have been fully vaccinated do not have to follow quarantine rules.
