With the false reserves of Donald Trump and ongoing problems with distribution, the CDC’s new director announced this week that it could take several months until the COVID-19 vaccine is available to the general public.
The forecast by the director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, contradicts the Trump administration’s previous claim that the vaccine would be widely available by the end of February or early March. According to Walensky via the Today show, it does not happen. Currently, the Biden administration is committed to the goal of distributing 100 million doses in the first 100 days.
“I do not think by the end of February we will have the vaccine in every pharmacy in this country,” Walensky said. “We are going to stick to the plan, but also want to be very aware of the fact that after 100 days there are still many Americans who need vaccine, so we have our pedal to the metal to make sure we can get as much vaccine out there. ‘
State supplies have been low since the Trump administration lied about its plan to keep second doses in reserve. In the US, more than 16 million people received the first dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, and nearly 3 million were fully vaccinated.
“We recognize this as the immediate emergency to get this country healthy again,” Walensky said. “At the moment I think we still have a vaccine on the shelves that we need to get into people, so that we are deploying places to get people in … We’re looking at community vaccination centers, stadiums and gyms. to mobile units to really get to every corner of this country, federally qualified health care centers and pharmacies. ‘
The new government is also trying to address the reluctance that many still have to receive the vaccine.
“There are a lot of different flavors in vaccines, I would say,” she said. “Some people just need it to be comfortable. Some people need permission to take the time to get the vaccine or enough space to take the day off if they feel bad the next day. Some of it is their will. “Just see how it goes. Some of it is education … and we have to bring that science to them through their trusted people.”
It is possible that a third vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, which requires only one shot, will soon go to the FDA for approval and could help the US increase vaccine production. Until then, it looks like we’ll be hanging out indoors for a while and taking social distance.
