New CDC Director Rochelle Walensky extends moratorium on eviction due to COVID-19 until at least March 31

On her first day as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Rochelle Walensky, MD, she is already making big moves.

Walensky announced on Twitter on Wednesday night that she will extend the eviction moratorium until the end of March due to the economic impact of COVID-19.

This impact, she said in a statement, “has also caused an affordable housing crisis that is affecting some communities excessively.”

“As a protective measure for public health, I will postpone the current order to temporarily stop residual evictions until at least March 31, 2021,” she said.

On the same evening, the CDC issued a forecast that up to 508,000 coronavirus-related deaths could be reported by February 13th.

“Despite extensive mitigation efforts, COVID-19 is still spreading in the United States at an alarming rate,” Walensky said.

“We need to take action to ward off cases and keep people in their homes and outside congregations – such as shelters – where COVID-19 can gain even stronger foothold,” she continued.
