New cases in Allegheny province continue to decline

Allegheny County continues to see a decline in the number of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths associated with covid-19.

According to the health department, the province has added 394 new cases of coronavirus in the past two days. This is more than 12% less new business than a week ago (450) and more than 50% less than a month ago (796).

Of the new cases, officials said 275 were confirmed by 2,056 PCR tests done from January 2 to Sunday. Officials reported that three of the positive tests were more than a week old.

According to officials, 119 of the new cases were listed as likely. Health officials define a probable case as a case in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or coviate symptoms with a ‘high risk’ exposure ‘to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.

The seven-day case average is down to 267, while the seven-day case totals at 1,866. Each of these figures has not been so low since November 10th.

New cases ranged from 4 months to 94 years, with a mean age of 39 years.

The age distribution of the most recent cases – 198 women, 196 men – is:

  • Ages 0-4: 8
  • Ages 5-12: 21
  • Ages 13-18: 24
  • Ages 19-24: 30
  • Ages 25-49: 173
  • Ages 50-64: 78
  • Ages 65 and older: 59

Officials report that the age of one case is not known at this time.

Some reports have indicated that covid testing has declined over the past few months. Although the data carries it out, it does not appear that the new case numbers are declining.

In mid-December, Allegheny County’s seven-day PCR test average stood at about 2,500 tests per day. In mid-January, the number dropped to closer to 1,900 per day. In mid-February it is about 1100 per day. However, the percentage of PCR tests that return positive has also gradually decreased. In mid-December, the average positivity rate was 30%, in mid-January 26% and currently around 18%.

Health officials reported that there had been no new deaths related to covid in the past two days. During the first 15 days of February, the country reported 130 deaths, 43% less than reported in the first 15 days of January (228).

The state health department reported Monday that three new covie-related deaths had occurred in Allegheny County over the past two days, bringing the state’s death in the province to 1,646. The difference between the province and the state is attributed to different reporting methods.

Health officials report that 85,265 provincial residents received at least one dose of a vaccine, while 40,842 individuals received both shots.

Despite a slight increase in the number of people in hospital for covid, the seven-day hospitalization average of Allegheny County is lower to 239 – a point it has not been since November 14 (237).

According to the Open Data PA website, there are currently 223 residents of Allegheny County hospitalized with covid-19, of which 58 are in intensive care units and 20 in a ventilator.

Since the pandemic began last spring, Allegheny County has seen 73,399 cases of coronavirus, of which 57,794 were confirmed by PCR tests and 15,605 of them were considered probable cases.
