Netflix makes its promise to deliver a new movie every week of the year. Here now with the details in a small segment we call Fame and Fortune is Alexandra Canal. Alexandra, I think if any business has the deep pockets to make sure they have the content to do so, it’s Netflix.

ALEXANDRA CHANNEL: Oh, yes, Netflix says they already have 71 projects in the pipeline. This is a brand new movie that has never been seen before during the whole year. And some of these movies look incredibly impressive. I want to shout out a few. First is ‘Malcolm and Marie’ starring Zendaya and John David Washington. This movie has already gotten a bit of an Oscar version. It was shot in black and white. It was actually filmed in July at the height of the pandemic, probably one of the only films shot at the time. Zendaya, of course, one actress experiencing her moment in the sun after winning an Emmy for her role in ‘Euphoria’, is definitely excited to watch it.

Another movie to watch is a star-studded movie called “Don’t Look Up.” Here play Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, and it’s just to name a few. It’s from the same director who brought us ‘The Big Short’. And it’s about two astronomers going on a media tour to try to convince the public that a deadly comet has gone to Earth. So this is another one to check out.

And then another one I want to highlight is this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie from production company Seth Rogen. He is working with Nickelodeon to have a new CGI version of this movie. And I think that’s a good move for Netflix, because we’ve seen how well the children’s category did at Disney +, and I do not think Netflix has had enough of that kind of movie. So I think this is something that could cause them to have more subscribers. And of course, Netflix will report earnings next week, all attention will be on the growing number of subscribers.

When they last reported their earnings in October, the number did disappoint. They could only rent about 2.2 million. It was much lower than their own company forecasts as well as Wall Street estimates. This time, Netflix says they expect to have added six million subscribers, and Wall Street estimates 5.9 million. So there will be close monitoring next week and hopefully they can deliver it because there are a lot of things in this earnings report. We have had those recent price increases, we have the bigger competition, and then of course this pandemic, which is still taking its toll on many different industries, including streaming.

Yes, I mean, you mentioned the competition. I mean, recently we got HBOMax online. We have Comcast’s Peacock. And the other night when I was watching TV, I saw – I think it was a 60-second ad for Netflix talking about all their new content. And, you know, you’m not used to it, so in a way it seemed almost desperate to me, the fact that Netflix said, hey, look, we’re here, keep an eye on us, right? I mean, they really had to come up.

ALEXANDRA CHANNEL: And I think you bring up a good point. And I think they do it because of the competition. If you think about HBOMax, it’s only been Disney + and Netflix for a while. I feel like these were the two streamers we were talking about, but HBOMax has some impressive content, some star-studded content. They announced earlier this week that they will be home for the new “Sex and the City” recharge. Sarah Jessica Parker is back, Cynthia Nixon. The only actress not to return is Kim Cattrall. And she has long said that she just does not want to do any other recharging. The fact that they were able to get those other stars is therefore a big deal. That’s why I think Netflix is evaluating it – who can sit in front of the camera and behind it.

Yes, I’m surprised she’s not going to be part of the recharge.

ALEXANDRA CHANNEL: I know.

Okay, thank you for helping me. I’m always looking for something to watch on Netflix, so it was very helpful. Alexandra Canal, appreciate it.
