When the following films in the Spider man, Poison, en Jumanji series leave the theaters next year, they will be on their way to a new streaming home. Variety reports that Netflix has won a nearly two-year auction for the exclusive US streaming rights to Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases, starting in 2022. Yes, MCU fans, that means you can look Spider-Man: No Way Home as many times as you want, without having to pay an Amazon Prime Video rental or signing up for a Starz subscription.

Since it looks like the US is one step closer to opening cinemas across the country, it will not be a similar setup as Warner Bros. and his cousin HBO Max did not work out: the films go to Netflix during the industry reference as the “pay-one-window” – a period that traditionally begins nine months after a theatrical release, but has become shorter in recent years due to situations like this and the situation that Godzilla vs. Kong last weekend on your computer screen. However, some Sony movies may still premiere on Netflix: Variety reports that the studio and streaming service have entered into a first-look agreement for any “films produced for the direct-to-streaming market.”

Library titles are also part of the package, meaning Netflix will license older movies from Sony, Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems and TriStar Pictures. Netflix subscribers can expect to see a mix of classic and new versions from the studio in the next year, and for a few years thereafter, the deal will last at least five years. It’s two years longer than the partnership between Disney and Netflix that would begin in 2016 – an arrangement that was cut short after the announcement of Disney +.
