Netflix launches ‘Dota 2’ anime series in March

Netflix prepares for global launch of new anime series based on Valve’s multiplayer online battle arena game Dota 2. The series of 8 episodes has the title Dota: Dragon’s Blood and is expected to be available for streaming worldwide on March 25.

It will tell the story of a Dragon Knight – enduring heroic heroes equipped with swords and shields in the game – named Davion, who is ‘dedicated to wiping the plague from the world’. On his travels, Davion crosses paths with an ancient firefly (a race of dragons) and the noble princess Mirana. As with epic stories like these, Davion becomes involved in events that are far greater than he expected.

Dragon’s blood was developed under the direction of showrunner Ashley Edward Miller, a screenwriter and producer who previously worked X-Men: first class, Thor and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It was drawn and animated by Studio MIR, known for The legend of Korra and Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender, which contains 80s-style artwork similar to the original Voltron.

Miller said in a statement:

Fans will love how we portrayed the DOTA 2 universe and weaved together an epic, emotional and adult-oriented story about some of their favorite characters. The film animation, acting and music are simply the next level and I am grateful for Valve to support our creative ambitions. ‘

Valve released Dota 2 in 2013 as continued on Defense of the old, a MOBA mod for Blizzard’s Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. It hasn’t been as popular over the past few years as before, but Valve hopes to keep players interested by updating heroes throughout the year instead of putting them all together in one big version.
