Netflix co-founder says Apple TV + has ‘no excuse’ to stay behind competitors

Apple TV + has been available since November 2019, but it only reached 3% of the market share of streaming platforms in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2020. Marc Randolph, co-founder and former CEO of Netflix, said today that Apple’s streaming service has ‘no excuses’ for behind competitors because the company has enough resources to provide a better platform.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Randolph was asked about how he sees Netflix’s competitors. While praising Disney + for more than 86 million subscribers in just over a year of operation, the former Netflix CEO suggested that Apple could work better with Apple TV +.

Randolph criticized Apple by suggesting that the company invest in more reasons to get people to pay for Apple TV + subscriptions rather than offering ‘gifts’. The report states that 62% of Apple TV + subscribers have the free trial period and that at least 29% of users do not plan to pay a subscription once the free trial has expired.

“At the moment, they have the highest rate. “You can’t keep replacing people, you have to give them a reason to stay,” Randolph said. He also argued that in some ways Apple should be more radical in making Apple TV + a true competitor to other platforms such as Netflix and Disney +.

If Apple spends a quarter as much time on content as on gifts, they can really play. […] They have no excuse [and] they are still not with both feet in it. They really need to do the entrepreneurial thing and walk and jump to the edge of the cliff.

Recent research by JustWatch obtained by 9to5Mac reveals that Apple TV + had only 3% of the market share in the fourth quarter of 2020 in the US, and was far behind competitors like Netflix, Disney + and even Peacock. Since Apple TV + only has original movies and programs, the catalog is remarkably small compared to its competitors.

Apple has extended the trial period again for current Apple TV + subscribers, who will now have free access to the streaming platform until July 2021. Anyone who buys a new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV can get a 1-year free subscription get. to Apple TV +, which could be seen as an attempt to attract more users to the platform.
