Nestle debuts this year with the first vegan KitKat bar

Chocolate is going to be plant based.

A vegan version of Nestle’s KitKat will soon be available to lovers looking for an alternative to dairy products, the company announced on its website on Tuesday. The alternative chocolate will hit the shelves in the UK this year.

The new vegan KitKat, called KitKat V, is vegan certified and made from 100% sustainable cocoa; however, the brand did not disclose exactly what it used non-fat milk for in its traditional milk chocolate bars. The company used rice, oats, soy, coconut, pea and almonds for its other vegetable products; Bloomberg reports that this particular KitKat will use a milk replacer on rice.

KitKat V was created in the UK, where Nestlé’s confectionery researchers wanted to make a vegan version of its iconic sweet cake that ‘would meet the high expectations of KitKat lovers everywhere.’

Nor is it the first foray into the plant market. Nestle not only has dairy ice cream, coffee creamers, rice and oat drinks and non-dairy cheese in its food portfolio, in addition to its plant-based burgers.

The new KitKat V rods will be rolled out in Britain to get started. KitKat, meanwhile, is manufactured under Hershey’s license in the United States – and not Nestle – so it’s still uncertain when, or if the US will get a taste soon.
