Nepal expects hundreds of climbers despite pandemic

Nepal expects hundreds of foreigners, despite the pandemic, to try to magnify the highest Himalayan peaks.

The Department of Tourism in Kathmandu said on Wednesday that more than 300 foreigners had shown interest in climbing Mount Everest this spring.

There is also similar interest in other mountains, said Mira Acharya, a director of the department.

One Japanese and four Canadian climbers are already moving to the base camps of Mount Manaslu and Mount Nuptse, respectively, Acharya said.

The spring season, which is popular due to the favorable weather, started this month. It lasts until the end of May, when weather deteriorates and climbing becomes dangerous.

Those who want to scale mountains still need to be quarantined in a hotel in the capital and tested negative for the coronavirus.
