NCAA Basketball Tournament for Men Health Protocols Contains 7 Negative COVID-19 Tests, Contact Detection Devices

The NCAA on Wednesday announced its health and safety protocols for the 2020 men’s basketball tournament, which will take place in March and April entirely in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas.

The most important protocol involves the test. All participants in Tier 1 travel levels – which include student-athletes, coaches, trainers, physical therapists, medical staff and equipment staff and officials – must show seven consecutive negative COVID-19 tests before arriving in Indianapolis. Level 1 individuals will then undergo daily PCR tests upon arrival and throughout the tournament.

Level 1 individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days, are at least two weeks after infection and are asymptomatic, will not need to be tested daily, and individuals who have been removed from Covid19 for at least two weeks vaccine.

All Tier 1 entrants will also be required to wear KINEXON movement equipment during the tournament, including during practice and games, to locate contact and quarantine.

The protocol was determined by the NCAA in collaboration with the Marion County Department of Public Health.

“Our emphasis is on the safety and well-being of everyone who participates in the event,” said Dr. Brian Hainline, NCAA’s chief medical officer, said in a statement. “By working with local health officials to develop protocols and apply COVID-19 tests, we are confident that we will provide a safe environment for student-athletes, coaches, administrators and officials.”

The NCAA announces its final attendance policy after Feb. 1, but said Wednesday that up to six family members per Tier 1 contestant will be allowed per venue per game, with attendance numbers at 420.

All teams will stay in Marion County hotels. The NCAA announced earlier this week that four Marriott properties connected to the Indiana Convention Center will house the teams.
