NC weather: icy rain, ice expected in parts of central North Carolina Saturday morning

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – Thousands across North Carolina are currently without power as ice rain moves across the state.

A winter weather forecast is in effect until Saturday afternoon for much of North Carolina.

The advice extends from the provinces of Wake, Durham, Orange, Chatham, Nash and Edgecombe north to Virginia.

Staff, Vance and Granville counties were upgraded on Friday afternoon following a warning of a winter storm, where an extra 0.25 “ice is possible. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in force for the triangle, North Orange and Durham ice, less to the south.

The warnings / advice will now last until Sunday afternoon, although there will be little additional icing after early Saturday afternoon.

According to Duke Energy, more than 1,000 customers in Chatham County are experiencing power outages.

The original advice was issued Friday morning and it included chances of ice Friday and Saturday morning.

The first round of winter weather was felt especially around the border between North Carolina and Virginia. Rain fell on a small amount of ice on elevated surfaces – such as tree trunks and railings.

However, a second round of rain arrived on Friday night and the temperature dropped below freezing.

Freezing rain is likely from the Triangle to the Virginia border.

Only a slight sheen is expected in most of the Triangle, with perhaps a few bridges or trespasses developing ice. It is predicted that the temperature will drop to 31 or 32 only on RDU, so the accumulation of ice is quite difficult at these temperatures.

If we drop just another degree or two, ice accumulation will be greater.

Further north the temperature will drop to about 29 or 30, and this is the area where up to 0.15 – 0.20 “ice is possible. This amount of ice could lead to some power outages and roads could be more worrying. Hohmann said said the morning. Typically .25 “is the threshold for more effects of freezing rain.

The icy rain should end Saturday afternoon.

We have the potential to pick up an inch to an inch and a half of rain from Saturday to Sunday morning. We can also wake up to a slippery spot or two Sunday morning, especially north of I-85.

The ABC11 First Alert Weather Team will work 24 hours a day to monitor any changes to the forecast. You can see the updates in this story, on TV or in our programs on your connected devices.
