Minnesota Timberwolves star Malik Beasley was sentenced to just 120 days in prison – and was banned from possession of weapons for life – after pleading guilty to the threats of crimes for pointing a firearm at a family during a bizarre incident in September.
Prosecutors in Hennepin County, Minnesota, say Beasley’s Plymouth home was accidentally placed on a “Parade of Homes” list this fall – which is essentially a tourist guide to impressive mansions in the area. The list led to an increase in vehicle traffic around Beasley’s home – which made him really angry, prosecutors said.
According to officials, on September 26, Beasley became so frustrated that he walked to a visiting car that was near the end of his driveway. and aimed a gun busy with it. Prosecutors say he then ordered the family inside the ride to scurry.
The 24-year-old Beasley, who according to police officers was also in possession of marijuana at the time, was later arrested … and eventually charged with violent threats and drug possession.
At a virtual court hearing in December, Beasley pleaded guilty to the charge of threatening … and in return, prosecutors agreed to drop the drug charge.
At the trial, Beasley said of his actions: “I was not in my mind. I am ready to go on.”
Beasley returned to virtual court on Tuesday for sentencing … and the judge ordered him to spend 120 days in a prison facility known as ‘The Workhouse’ at Hennepin County Adult Correction Facility.
As part of the sentencing, the judge ruled that Beasley does NOT have to serve the time during the NBA season … a tentative date on May 26 to report to jail.
The judge also said that Beasley could eventually be released on electronic home monitoring if COVID-19 precautions were taken.
Beasley was also ordered to complete an anger management program and was hit with a life-long ban on possession of firearms. Beasley was also ordered to use no alcohol or drugs and randomly completed drug tests.
Prosecutors say Beasley read a statement during the trial in which he told the court: “I am not that person. I humbly apologize for my actions.”
