NASA rover emits the first sounds ever recorded on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance Rover recorded and sent back the first sound from the surface of Mars.

The audio clips were released Monday along with new video recordings of the Rover when it landed on Thursday.

The sound was captured by two microphones mounted on Perseverance. In one of the tracks, a sound can be heard that sounds like wind.

Perseverance successfully landed on Mars’ surface last week, seven months after it was launched into space.

Dave Gruel, chief engineer for the Rover’s camera and microphone subsystem, said more tracks would come from Mars as Perseverance continued its mission.

“We are counting on both of these instruments to record some amazing sounds from the surface of Mars,” Gruel told NBC News.

“Imagine sitting on the surface of Mars and listening to the environment,” Gruel said in a newsletter. “It’s cool. Really neat. Overwhelming, if you will.”

NASA posted the first color photos of Mars last week. According to Hallie Gengl of NASA, the photos are a very high resolution compared to what NASA previously captured.
