MyPillow Inc. sued voting machine maker Dominion Voting Systems on Monday, a controversial allegation after Dominion sued the bedding company and its Trump-supporting CEO, Mike Lindell, for defamation of election fraud claims.
MyPillow’s case claims more than $ 1.6 billion in damages.
In the complaint, the private company says it is suing to protect freedom of speech and to inflict damage that MyPillow says it has suffered.
“This lawsuit is being brought to support the market of ideas and to repair the serious damage that MyPillow suffered as a result of Dominion’s suppression of speech and attacks on the company,” the case reads.
According to MyPillow, there is a difference between statements by Mr. Lindell and the company.
“With the verdict, Lindell spoke for himself, not MyPillow,” the case says. “MyPillow did not talk about the 2020 election. However, as a U.S. company that upholds U.S. constitutional values, MyPillow unconditionally supports Lindell’s right to exercise its first freedoms of amendment regarding matters of critical importance, such as election matters. ”
“This is an undeserved retaliation lawsuit, filed by MyPillow to divert attention from the damage that Dominion has done,” said Stephen Shackelford, a lawyer for Dominion.
In February, Dominion in Denver, MyPillow and Mr. Lindell, sued in federal court in Columbia District. According to Dominion’s case, Mr. Lindell slandered the company with accusations that he had ruined President Biden’s election in 2020, and Dominion demanded more than $ 1.3 billion in damages.
No court or electoral authority has found evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The version of the ballot papers confirms the election results in several key states and provinces. Former President Donald Trump’s campaign and his allies have lost dozens of lawsuits to challenge the results.
