A young man was shot dead in Yangon, Myanmar, during a protest against the February 1 coup that overthrew the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
The death toll has risen to 238, the activist group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners reported.
The violence comes amid widespread domestic outrage and international condemnation after the country’s government was overthrown in a coup led by senior general Aunt Hlaing, commander – in – chief of the Myanmar army.
Suu Kyi, a 1991 Nobel laureate who was elected to office in 2011, is still being held by the junta.
The State Department has offered temporary protection status to the approximately 1,600 Myanmar residents living in the United States.
