Musk says Tesla will be shut down if its cars are spied on elsewhere in China

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc., said on Saturday that his company would be shut down if his cars were used to spy, and his first comment on news that China’s military had banned Teslas from its facilities.

“There is a very strong incentive for us to be very confidential with any information,” Musk said during a virtual discussion on a prominent Chinese forum. “If Tesla uses cars to spy on China or anywhere else, we will be shut down.”

Sources told Reuters on Friday that the Chinese military had banned Tesla cars from entering its complex, citing security room over cameras installed on the vehicles.

During a delivery event last year for China-made Model 3 sedans, Musk enthusiastically danced on stage and took off his jacket in a storm on social media.
