MSC cruise ship on fire off Greek coast

A major fire broke out on an MSC cruise ship in Greece on Friday.

The fire broke out on a fiberglass lifeboat on the MSC Lirica before 3:42 p.m. local time and, according to MSC Cruises, blew large plumes of smoke into the air.

The ship is stranded at the port of Corfu during the winter with 51 crew members on board, but no passengers. According to the cruise line, there were no injuries.

CRYSTAL RUSSIA TO RESUME THE SAIL IN BAHAMAS IN JULY

The cause was not immediately known. A spokesman for the cruise line said an investigation was underway.

Photos of the scene showed a portion of the ship’s center being blackened by the fire, while firefighters sprayed the flames of several smaller boats next to the cruise ship.

It took firefighters about three hours to get the fire under control. Attempts to fight the fire were completed at 18:58 local time, according to the cruise line.

The MSC spokesman said damage had been done to the side of the ship, but not inside.

The MSC Cruises has a 902-foot-long, 65,591-tonne 992-cabin cabin with a capacity of 2,548 passengers plus 752 crew members. Facilities on board the ship include a spa, theater, casino and disco.

The Lirica would resume sailing across the Mediterranean in May.
