Mount Etna in Italy, the most active volcano in Europe, erupted on Tuesday, creating a fountain of lava and sending plumes of orange smoke into the sky.
The eruption forced Sicily’s Catania airport to close temporarily – which often happens when the volcano is active.
No injuries or deaths were reported.
Residents in the village of Pedara near the crater said it spewed not only ash but also large pieces of volcanic rock throughout the area.
“It was raining rocks,” resident Letizia Olivieri told the Associated Press. “Something I’ve never seen in my entire life.”
The mayor was in a state of emergency, the mayor said as residents and municipal teams cleared the street on Wednesday.
