Mortal Kombat Movie focuses on Scorpion, Sub-Zero Rivalry

The new live-action Mortal Kombat movie focuses largely on the rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, two of the games’ best-known characters.

The upcoming live action Mortal Kombat film will focus on the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring, Furious 7), the new film will be the franchise’s first proper journey to the big screen since 1997 Mortal Kombat: Destruction. Like the movie from the 90s, the new Mortal Kombat will adapt the video game series with the same title, known for its violent ‘fatal’ finishes and fantastic martial arts story.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero are perhaps the two most recognizable characters out of all Mortal Kombat tradition. The former is a dead yellow-clad ninja who breathes fire and encourages enemies to move closer to him and the latter is a blue-clad ninja with magical ice powers. First appears in the original Mortal Kombat arcade game, Scorpion and Sub-Zero have always surrounded each other in the games’ stories. Most episodes contain several versions of the same few rhythms – the two belong to rival tribes of warriors; Scorpion and his family are killed, presumably by Sub-Zero and his family members; Scorpio was raised to take revenge.

Talk to you recently Entertainment weekly, director Simon McQuoid, unveiled the new version of the Scorpion / Sub-Zero story of the new film and claims that it will be the core of the film. “It’s like a family drama with exciting brutal battles,” McQuoid said. “That’s the image of this movie for me.” According to McQuoid, the film begins with an extensive flashback series outlining the origins of Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim)’s rivalry. The scene, which takes place in feudal Japan, shows the feud between the two fighters’ rival generations, which ultimately has gruesome consequences for both of them. The film then jumps to the present day, where the consequences of the old conflict will surely be felt.

The compilation of the ninjas’ origin story so far in the past is a notable departure from the source material. In the matches, Scorpion killed Sub-Zero during the Mortal Kombat tournament, not long after his alleged offense took place. It looks like the new movie will make the screenplay revolve around it, with both characters probably already dead and resurrected by the time the modern conflict begins. However, the crux of the story seems to be the same, which should be a good sign for skeptics of adaptations of video games.

One big question that left the new Mortal Kombat images and revelations are how the ninjas’ backstory will join protagonist and series newcomer Cole Young (Lewis Tan). In the interview, McQuoid alludes to a blood connection between Cole and the past, and it looks likely that he will be brought into Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s feuds on one side or the other. Since the action apparently starts with Sub-Zero trying to kill Cole, it’s likely to be a bond with Scorpion. Fans will have to keep speculating about the details while they wait Mortal Kombat to be released on April 16th.
