Morning Report: Georges St-Pierre Suggests What Conor McGregor Should Do To Recover From Dustin Poirier Loss

It takes a lot to catch Georges St-Pierre unknowingly, but at UFC 257, Dustin Poirier just did it.

St-Pierre is one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time and known for his analytical approach to fights. Last year, St-Pierre applied the expertise and switched to an analyst role for Quebec’s RDS (Reseau des Sports) broadcasting team. But as good as St-Pierre is, he admits Poirier did not see him beat Conor McGregor this past weekend.

“I thought Conor was going to win, and I was wrong,” St-Pierre told Michael Bisping. Do You Believe Me podcast. ‘I was very surprised at how Poirier kept his composure under pressure. I think one of Conor’s biggest strengths is that he overwhelms his opponents with his pressure, with his presence, with all the information he gives to his opponent. All the things he does, the kicks, the chats, it all. He overwhelms his opponents and many of them fall under pressure. But Poirier remained sharp and that was a true testament to how good he is. It was breathtaking. It will now be really interesting to see how Conor can get back out of it. ”

Poirier’s victory was the biggest in his career and probably the biggest loss of McGregor. This is the first time McGregor has been cleared and left ‘Notorious’ without a clear path forward. A trilogy fight with Poirier is a possibility, as is a third battle with his original rival, Nate Diaz; however, both matches offer the dangerous possibility of suffering another loss, and many fans are beginning to question whether the end for the biggest star in the sport is near. But not St-Pierre.

“I believe Conor can recover from the loss,” St-Pierre said. “He’s the kind of fighter, I believe, and he trusts himself. If he is confident, he performs at his best. He likes to act confident (pantomimes the Billionaire Strut), fake it until you get it right, he plays a role he is very confident. Maybe, deep down, he’s very scared, but I believe he’s putting in the effort, that confidence, to be loved or hated by fans. It will now be interesting to see how he gets back from it. I believe in Conor. I believe he will come back from it. I believe he can overcome the obstacle. ”

McGregor’s return is already an important conversation in the MMA community. After the fight, fans immediately began noticing that McGregor is now 3-3 since leaving the featherweight division, with a TKO loss in boxing well added. Some suggest that McGregor should return to £ 145, others should change McGregor from camp, and still others that McGregor can do nothing. That the game simply passed him by. For St-Pierre, it’s all straightforward: McGregor needs to change his mentality in the same way that St-Pierre did after his loss to Matt Serra.

“He needs to be reborn,” St-Pierre said. “He needs to change things in his training and in his life that he believes were the reasons for his failure. It does not matter if it is true or not for as long as he believes. For example, when I lost with Matt Serra, I threatened myself to believe I lost to Matt Serra because I underestimated him. Maybe I was not scared enough, maybe I did not have as much as I had to do in training, this is what I tried to force myself to believe. Maybe that’s not true. But the important (part) is that he believes in it, so that he can build his confidence in it, because he believes it. It does not matter.

“He has to find what he thinks he did wrong in his previous preparation for the fight, whether it be his training, his life or whatever, and not to make the same mistake twice. It does not matter if most people believe that it is stupid, as long as he himself believes it. His confidence will grow from there and he will be able to get a better Conor McGregor back, at least as well as he does. ”

St-Pierre often attributed his loss to Matt Serra as a better fighter, and this certainly seems to be the case. After that battle, St-Pierre never lost a battle again. In turn, McGregor has at least publicly suggested that a lack of recent activity played a role in his performance and he hopes to compete more frequently in 2021. And if St-Pierre is right, that might be all McGregor needs to get back. on top.
