MESA, AZ – It’s not uncommon to hear and see fireworks just before New Year’s Eve.
While the Valley is ready to ring in 2021, some neighborhoods are seeing more and more air burning with fireworks, though law enforcement agencies across the state have reminded that Arizona fireworks are illegal.
One Mesa neighborhood achieved its share this month, but some neighbors say there are more than just fireworks.
“Once it’s dark, and somewhere in the early hours,” Amy Reid said. “Some sound closer, others sound further, but we always hear it.”
An observation video of Reid’s home shows one of the explosions that she said shook on December 17.
Tuesday night it happened again. Her home security cameras captured a similar scene again – a bright white flash, followed by a big bang. On Tuesday, the flash could be seen at a distance from her driveway.
“I thought I would just see someone’s house waving,” Reid adds. “I expected to see a fire in the air or a large plume of smoke.”
Reid is worried that the big trees are not of your average fireworks. “I’m not a connoisseur of these things, but it was scary,” she said. “If someone uses some explosive fireworks or something that is not legal, what if the next one hits my house?”
Under Arizona law, only fireworks are allowed on the land for sale and use outside of public events.
Mesa police spokesman Nik Rasheta told ABC15 that they had received several “fireworks-related calls” but that they were not aware of a ‘suspicious bang’ phenomenon.
The department announced this statement to residents via social media this week:
“New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and there are a few things you need to remember about fireworks. Protect your pets inside, as many are frightened by loud noises and tend to run.
