More than 4,500 cases of COVID have been confirmed in the past two weeks among children under 14 as active infections such as hospitalizations

Active COVID infections in Massachusetts rose to 35,075 on Wednesday, up from 34,652 on Tuesday, according to the latest Department of Public Health data.

State health officials on Tuesday confirmed another 2,292 new COVID-19 cases. According to the Department of Public Health, it is based on 118,123 new molecular tests.

Officials also announced 21 more COVID-related deaths, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 17,014.

The Department of Public Health has added new data confirming the number of infections confirmed among children under 15. During the past two weeks, 1174 cases were confirmed in children younger than 5; 1,499 infections were confirmed in children between 5 and 9 years of age; and 1,889 infections were confirmed in children between the ages of 9 and 15, according to the latest data from the Department of Public Health.

About 3,031 teens between the ages of 15 and 19 came down with COVID between March 21 and April. According to DPH, an astonishing 7,205 cases among 20 people have been confirmed.

The seven-day average positive test is 2.46%, slightly lower than 2.5% reported on Tuesday.

Since the pandemic began, officials have confirmed 611,825 total COVID-19 cases across the state.

The number of COVID patients admitted to the hospital on Wednesday is 755, compared to 725 the previous day. Of these, 179 are in intensive care, and 105 are intubated, data show.

So far, 4,111,327 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered in Massachusetts, and 1,571,073 residents have now been fully vaccinated.

According to the latest data from the Department of Public Health, the number of cities and towns at high risk for COVID-19 spread increased to 55 last week, from 32 the previous week.

The Baker administration on Wednesday announced the expansion of the state vaccine registration system to include the Amherst-Northampton Collaborative and Marshfield Regional Collaborative. Government Charlie Baker said the state is working to improve the user experience of the pre-registration website, noting that in the coming weeks residents will have the opportunity to choose between vaccination sites before choosing from the available appointments.

“We will continue to improve and make the process even easier,” Baker told a news conference on Wednesday.
