According to the Associated Press, Russian security forces on Sunday detained more than 3,200 people participating in protests in the country’s 11 time zones. Most protesters chanted slogans against President Vladimir Putin, demanding the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has been in prison since returning to Russia after being treated in Germany on January 17 for near-fatal poisoning. Navalny, 44, blamed the Kremlin. for his attempted assassination by placing a nerve agent in his underwear.
The Biden government has criticized the protest against protesters and Navalny’s incarceration. “The US condemns the continued use of harsh tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists by Russian authorities for a second week in a row,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote in a tweet. Russia’s foreign ministry has called Blinken’s tweet a “gross interference in Russia’s internal affairs” and accused Washington of trying to destabilize the situation.
