More than 23 dead when bandits attack five districts in northern Nigeria

Authorities in the state confirmed the killings in a statement released by Homeland Security and Home Affairs Commissioner Samuel Aruwan.

The latest raids took place barely 72 hours after armed gangs invaded Birnin Gwari and Kajuru districts, killing 19 people, Aruwan said.

Many commissioners were looted in the attacks and ten residents were killed in the district alone during the attack, the commissioner said.

“Following the security situation within the last 24 hours in the state, the Kaduna state government has received reports from security agencies about the killing of 23 civilians in various attacks on soft targets in Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Chikun, Igabi and Kauru local government areas. , ”Aruwan said.

“The attacks on soft targets in these local government areas have taken place around the borders of Kaduna State with neighboring states,” he added.

Kaduna, in northwestern Nigeria, has remained isolated from the militant group Boko Haram, which operates in northeastern Nigeria, but armed violence by kidnappers and cattle brothers has plagued the state.

A recent study by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies shows that around 1000 deaths have been recorded in 220 violent incidents in Kaduna.

According to the study, at least 50,000 people were displaced and 400 abducted due to ransom.

State Gov. Nasir el-Rufai has been sympathetic to families of victims of the recent attacks, Aruwan said in the statement.

The Nigerian government has recently replaced its military top brass amid pressure from civilians to take fresh hands to manage widespread insecurity and insurgency in the West African country.
