More than 1 million first doses of COVID-19 vaccine arrive in Texas this week

More than 1 million first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be shipped to Texas this week, according to Texas health officials.

The Texas Department of State Health Services announced the shipment Friday, saying the state allocates 929,320 doses to 1,561 providers in 234 counties.

According to health officials, there will also be 200,000 extra doses available for pharmacies and federally qualified health centers.

Below are how many vaccines the hubs in Bexar County will receive next week, according to the state health services website.

  • San Antonio Metropolitan Health District Main Immunization Clinic – 10 530 doses of Pfizer vaccine for week 13.

  • University’s health system – 12,870 doses of Pfizer vaccine for week 13.

  • * UT Health San Antonio / Wellness 360 (adult) – 5 850 doses of Pfizer vaccine for week 13.

According to state health officials, the increase in vaccine supply worldwide is due to 245,200 doses of the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The FDA approved the single vaccine this past weekend and will send 24,000 doses to vaccine suppliers in Arlington, Dallas and Houston.

It is unclear when doses of the J&J vaccine will still arrive in Bexar County.

In addition to these first doses, according to state health officials, the state is also ordering 457,000 doses for people who received their first vaccination a few weeks ago.

“DSHS automatically recommends second doses to arrive at suppliers in the week that they can be administered, so that it will be available if necessary. “People should return to the same provider within six weeks of receiving it for the first time to receive their second dose,” health officials said in a news release.
