Monster Hunter Rise improves its food, exercise and Buddy systems

Capcom will add interesting new features in the city Monster Hunter Rise. The developer and publisher of Monster Hunter Rise invited Polygon to a short video show outlining the changes to the food and training systems, as well as several others.

Like the new Wire Bug and mobile Palamutes – which you can also use to move around the city – Monster Hunter Rise‘s Kamura Village will change a lot from previous Monster Hunter games. The changes are especially noticeable when you look at multiplayer in the city, the Buddy system, the training area and the new Dango food system.

Dango – a new food system

Dangos are Japanese dumplings, and they are the main food in Monster Hunter Rise. At the Dango bar, you can buy three Dango on a stick, each with a different flavor. Like previous Monster Hunter games, you can use meals, points, or cash to buy your food.

In addition to increasing your health and endurance for your next hunt, the different flavors offer different benefits to help you. And with Monster Hunter Rise, there are more unique food benefits, which means you are less likely to overlap an armor skill you already have equipped.

If you build your Dango from three pieces, you can combine any flavors you want. But just because you choose a particular fragrance and its attendant benefit, does not mean you will get it. Each benefit has a percentage chance of being activated every time you eat.

For example, the video presentation showed how Hunter buys Dango Money Maker (increased money), Dango Medic (increased healing of items) and Dango Bird Caller (who approaches more Spiribirds while hunting). Money Maker has a 90% chance of activating, while Medic and Bird Caller had 85% and 80% respectively.

Players will unlock new flavors of Dango to combine as they progress through the story. And there is, of course, a delicious new food song and dance that plays every time you order Dango.

The Buddy Plaza

Buddies are a big part of Monster Hunter. If you are hunting alone or in a small group, you need Palico to help you. But Stand up expand the measurement system by having you take both a Palico and a Palamute – the mobile dog friend.

You will manage these Buddies in the Buddy Plaza, with the help of Buddy Expert Shirubei and Buddy Handler Iori. With their help, you can visit the Buddy Dojo to find new mates after each quest.

If you hire a new friend, they will join your group. And while you may only have two on a particular hunt with you, you can send the others on missions to collect items for you. When playing with friends, you can only take one partner – either a Palico or a Palamute, depending on what you choose.

Different Palicos come with different movements, while Palamutes all have similar gear slots. You can customize your buddies with unique equipment at the Smithy.

Multiplayer

Players need Senri, the postman, to switch between offline and online

Senri the Mailman (he’s actually a Palico, but whatever) will help you with all your online play. You will also pick up any DLC you buy from Senri.

With Senri you can choose to play online or offline, which determines whether friends or other Hunters may join your party. Online and offline are switchable Monster Hunter Rise, so you have to swap back and forth, depending on your situation.

Other than Monster Hunter: World, friendly Hunters can travel to your version of Kamura Village, and you can jump around, explore or even practice together. If you start a search online, friends or random players will travel to your city before embarking on the hunt.

We are currently not sure how or how not Monster Hunter Rise will address the issue players had Monster Hunter: World where friends could not join a story mission unless they had all first seen the cutscene in single player.

Training

The Training Area in Monster Hunter Rise got a complete overhaul. Not only can your friends join you in the practice area, but you can also practice against a giant mecha monster dummy.

In the training area you can talk to Sekirei the Trainer (another Palico). They give you training opportunities for the “Toadversary” dummy. You can change his head position, in which direction he is looking, if it is tracking the player, and whether it is in a standby or attack mode. You can even change how many wire bugs you have or change the behavior of other targets in the practice area.

If you lock your settings, the Toadversary will start acting – or stop acting, depending on what you choose. The practice area also monitors your total damage to the dummy, including the damage of your most recent combination.

Capcom will start Monster Hunter Rise exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on March 26th.
