Monday afternoon Cardinal news and notes

—Dana Evans is the ACC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season. She is the first player to earn the honor more than once in 2020-21.

—Unonymous coaches of university hoops give their true chance (Athletic Link) to every team in the ACC, including Louisville.

Louisville: ‘They do not hit you on the backboard or around the edge like before. They come to you in different ways with their depth. Carlik Jones and David Johnson are the best guards in the league. The big ones are just OK. They are serviceable but not dynamic. They play hard defensively. They do not give you very good at the basket. They are really lucky to have Jones because they do not have a blue talent. They need him to do a lot. ”

—Lynn Family Stadium was nominated for the Stadium Database’s 2020 Stadium of the Year competition.

—Whas-11’s Tyler Greever read well how West Unseld paved the way for so much at U of L.

—Hailey Van Lith is right in the rest of the race (Athletic Link) for the national first year of the year.

Hailey Van Lith, Louisville

12.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 2.1 APG

Of Lith’s shooting, playing and defending ability is a big reason why Louisville was able to achieve the number 1 ranking for the first time in program history. But what is her most valuable asset to the team is her bounce. At 5-foot-7, Van Lith is third on the team in rebounds per game; Louisville’s leading and second leading rebounders are 6-3 and 6-5, respectively. And unlike the other three players on this list, Van Lith is not the best player for her team. She was asked to stand out while playing alongside a National Player of the Year candidate in Dana Evans. For some, it may be more challenging than staying the undisputed star.

Quotations

‘What blows me away from Van Lith is that her game is as complete as a first-year student. She can score from all three levels. She’s a great shooter, but she’s also an excellent midfielder. She is really fickle. She is amazing with her headaches. She also has a nice look inside. She can finish at the edge. She’s a good passer, but even more, she’s an excellent rebounder. She’s just stubborn. I mean, she has a car where she’s going to get the ball. … She can go in there and take rebounds, and Louisville need it because they’re playing a four-guard setup. So she realizes, ‘Hey, we need extra help to get back, so I’m going to do this.’ Very rarely do you see 5-foot-7 guards averaging more than six boards per game, especially as a first-year student, because the hardest thing to adjust, in my opinion, is the physicality of the college game. ‘ – Women’s Basketball Ball Analyst

‘I do not think it is easy to go in and play the players who have determined their roles, and then this first-year student comes in. If you watch Iowa, everyone knows it’s Caitlin’s team. But Hailey plays in Dana Evans’ team. And she had to do something different every night and she was so stubborn. ” – SEC head coach

And Jeff Walz is the core of the national coach of the year.

Jeff Walz, Louisville

After Louisville went through its own COVID-19 break, Walz took his team to first place in the AP poll for the first time in program history. The ability to lead any team through this season is impressive, but what sets Walz apart is how agile and creative he was in terms of Louisville’s scheduling. He was one of the first to do ‘Twitter schedule’, willing to adapt immediately to find games and make them work. Oher coaches said Walz, behind the scenes, even helped their teams find games – connecting coaches, passing phone numbers and suggesting games based on schedule openings.

Every coach needs to have some organization to reach the top of the profession, but this season has brought new challenges to them. And through it all, Walz has coached a team that easily included two freshmen in the starting lineup and has yielded Louisville’s highest offense and most effective offense over the past five seasons.

Quotable

‘The reality is that he has dealt with tremendous adversity, and that he has just kept moving forward. I think it’s the biggest thing as a coach that I look and go as a partner: ‘Wow, they were positive. They have found a way to turn their situation around and make the most of it. They found a non-traditional way. ‘Jeff has to go on Twitter and look for games – he’s an innovator. He’s a great tactician in the game. He really puts his players in good positions to be successful. And I think he’s a relentless worker with a great basketball spirit. ‘ – Head coach of Pac-12

Below expectations

Louisville (4-7)

2020 review: Coaches can also have second-year slumps. Scott Satterfield surprised the ACC in its first season with an eight-win win, but it crashed in 2020 with a disappointing record of four wins. Two games looked invincible (Miami and Notre Dame), and one was absolutely staggering: a 46-27 loss to Georgia Tech. The Cardinals lost their first four ACC games, but somehow they were in possession of the eventual playoff game Notre Dame on the road. Go figure.

2021 outlook: Eight players declared for the NFL draft, including best offensive player (receiver Tutu Atwell) and some coaching of the attack took place in the off-season. Back player Malik Cunningham is back to an up-and-down season that was finally 40 points (quarterback score) worse through the air than 2019, and in the end it was perhaps the difference in a few games that the season after a .500 could tilt. ends in 2020. All five beginners along the offensive line return. The defense was a headache last season. Disrupted assignments and confusion prevailed during the losing game of four games, but many of the players left the team as a bunch of youngsters who discovered Satterfield on the yard track tried to fill their shoes. The linebackers and secondary will be the story of the off-season.
