‘Mom’ canceled: Allison Janney explains why the show ends

Was Allison Janney blinded by CBS ‘decision to quit Ma?

During an appearance on Wednesday The late late show, the Emmy Award winner told James Corden she expected the sober live comedy to be renewed for at least one more season. But in February, the network did what Janney described as an earlier call than ending the still decently rated multi-camera.

“I’m sad,” Janney said. ‘I wish we had the writers at least another year to get as much time to start until the end. We found out sooner than we thought we would hear. We thought, ‘They’ll definitely want more Ma, ‘and they decide not to.’

The decision to settle things, Janney suspected, was probably a financial decision.

“There are so many reasons for that – mostly money,” she said. ‘But I know Chuck Lorre is writing the last episode, and we’re filming the third to last episode right now.

“I have many moments where I just stand on the set and take it in and look at all the faces I’ve been looking at for eight years,” Janney continued. ‘Suddenly it’s gone. And no matter how much I prepare myself for it, I know I’m just going to be tears, buckets of tears, because it was just so amazing. The wonderful letters I get from people who are in the program or have become sober with us. It was a great show to be a part of, and it’s so rare when you do something like that [where] it affects people in a positive way in the world. It makes me sad, but beyond. “(TVLine contacted CBS for comment.)

Janney reflected on the latest season news in a candid Instagram post earlier on February 18. ‘Become part of Ma “The last eight years – the laughter, love and hope that recovery can bring – have been one of the great honors in my life,” she wrote. ‘I want to thank [executive producers] Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker [and] Nick Bakay, and all the writers … because they gave us these wonderfully flawed and sweet characters to bring to life. ”

Ma‘s eighth season was the first (and now) only) season without Anna Faris, who played Janney’s daughter Christy on screen. In the wake of Faris’ departure, Christy was sent to Georgetown Law School, Washington DC, with a full scholarship.
