Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine was the second of two to now receive an emergency use authorization in the US, where the latest data from Johns Hopkins shows that nearly 23 million cases and more than 377,000 deaths have been reported since the onset of the pandemic .
The good news from Moderna is that the vaccine must provide the COVID-19 virus with immunity for at least one year, the biotechnology company said this week, according to Reuters.
Even better, the company says it will deliver at least 600 million and as many as 1 billion doses of its vaccine this year, while the US has already purchased 200 million doses from the company. The United Kingdom as well as the European Medicines Agency of the EU have also approved the corona virus vaccine for Moderna in recent days, and the company has also colored distribution agreements with other countries such as Japan, Israel and Canada.
Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization, warned on Monday that herd immunity – the phenomenon in which enough people have a natural or a vaccine-generated immunity against a virus that brings the pandemic to an end – is unlikely to reach 2021 will not be. The continuous deployment of coronavirus vaccines such as those of Moderna is what will accelerate us up to that point, and Swaminathan also seems to recognize that herd immunity can be achieved this year in at least a few pockets’ around the world.
