But for the photographer who captured the shot, the announcement of the Sussex’s second child was merely the latest milestone in a career in history.

Misan Harriman, a friend of the couple, said he shot the image remotely on an iPad. Harriman is based in London, while the Sussexes live in California after their split from the British royal family last year.

“Meg, I was there at your wedding to see how this love story begins, and my friend, I am honored to capture it,” he wrote on social media after the release of the picture. “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on this joyful news!”

Last year, Harriman became the first black photographer to shoot the cover of the all-important September issue of British Vogue.

The distribution features soccer player Marcus Rashford, model Adwoa Aboah and a number of other prominent fighters, and is titled ‘Activism Now: The Faces of Hope’.

It was an appropriate assignment for Harriman, who only became a professional photographer in 2016 after a career in finance, and whose images of the Black Lives Matter protests shot him to prominence in 2020.

“Through my lens, I saw the beating heart of London,” Harriman told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in August after a number of photos he took during protest rallies in the city went viral.

Both Harry and Meghan supported the Black Lives Matter movement and Harry reflected on his own unconscious prejudice and on the historical deeds of the British Empire to subjugate black populations around the world.
“I had an awakening as such because I was not aware of so many problems and so many problems in the UK, but also worldwide,” he said in October. “I thought I did it, but I did not.”

The couple’s shot was not the first time Harriman has been called to present a royal announcement to the world.

In 2019, he caught Princess Beatrice of York and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, again in black and white, to accompany the announcement of their engagement.
“You can not be nervous if the subjects are so comfortable,” Harriman told Vogue. “I call my lens the truth-seeker, and that’s exactly what was captured, two people finding their safe haven in each other.”
And his photo of Harry and Meghan also recalled an official photo of their 2018 wedding, shot by Alexi Lubomirski. The image also shows the couple lying in an embrace, moments after they got married.

No deadline was given in the couple’s announcement, but the image of Harriman showed a prominent bump.

“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother,” a spokesman for the couple said Sunday. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted with their second child.”

The announcement comes almost exactly 37 years after Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced they were expecting their second child – who happened to be Prince Harry.
