‘Minari’ star Yuh-Jung Youn calls British ‘snobbish’ in BAFTA speech

British people are known for being self-addicted, but even maybe they feel a little blinded by “Minari” star Yuh-Jung Youn’s brutal honest, funny assessment of them.

Shortly after expressing her condolences on the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, during her acceptance speech at the BAFTA Film Awards as a supporting actress, Youn probably delivered the biggest laugh of the night.

‘Thank you very much for this award. Every award is significant, but especially by British people, known as snobbish people, this award is recognized, and they approve of me as a good actor, I am very happy. Thank you very much, ”said Youn.

The evening’s co-host, Dermot O’Leary, did not quite know how to respond to Youn’s comments, raising an astonished eyebrow and moving on quickly.

In the press conference following her speech, Variety asked Youn to elaborate on her comments and whether her not-so-flattering (but probably fairly accurate) views come from personal experience.

‘Yes, it comes from personal experience. I have visited Britain many times and I was a fellow in a Cambridge college as an actor ten years ago. “Somehow it had every snobbish feeling, but not in a bad way,” Youn said. “You have a long history and then you are proud. As an Asian woman, I felt that these people are very snobbish, that’s my honest feeling. ‘

Youn’s victory over the BAFTAs, coupled with her previous victory award for Screen Actors Guild, could very well pave the way for another victory at the Oscars later this month. However, the actor said that she is definitely not looking that far ahead and expressed with a big laugh that she had had enough about her Oscar prospects.

“I know nothing about Oscars or BAFTAs,” Youn said. ‘I’ve been working in Korea for so long, I’m very well known domestically, not internationally. I do not know what is going on now, I do not know what is happening to me. So do not ask me! ”
