The U.S. House of Representatives could pass a resolution Monday night that would increase the amount of money individuals and families receive as a stimulus test.
A Republican leadership assistant told CNN that the Republican Party is not sweeping the bill, but that the chances are good to succeed. This is far from certain, but poets warn that it is possible.
The bill, which requires a 2/3 majority to pass because it will take place under suspension, will increase the amount of stimulus checks from $ 600 to $ 2,000 per individual.
The suitability for the checks is determined by a person’s most recent tax returns. Anyone who earns less than $ 75,000 as an individual, or $ 150,000 as a couple, will receive the full amount. The amount individuals receive decreases by $ 5 for every $ 100 a person earns more than $ 75,000. In short, it means that individuals earning more than $ 99,000 are not eligible, nor are couples earning more than $ 198,000.
If the bill passes the House with a strong Republican vote, it will put Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Senate majority, in a difficult position to decide whether to pass the Senate provision as a stand-alone bill on the floor must come.
While the president has encouraged Republicans to increase payments, many Republicans in McConnell’s ranks have made it clear that they do not think an increase is needed, given how much it will increase the price of the stimulus bill.
A vote on the checks is likely to divide the GOP conference and force some members to endure President Trump’s anger in his last days in office.
