Mike Pence underwent surgery to implant pacemaker

Former Vice President Mike Pence underwent surgery Wednesday to have a pacemaker implanted, his office said Thursday. “The routine operation was successful, and he is expected to fully recover in the coming days and return to normal activities,” Pence’s office said.

Pence’s office said he announced to the Trump team in 2016 that he had a diagnosis of asymptomatic left ventricle, and that he had experienced symptoms such as a slow heartbeat over the past two weeks.

Pence, 61, underwent the procedure at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia. In a statement, he said he was “grateful for the prompt professionalism and care of outstanding physicians, nurses and staff” at the medical center and its Indiana physicians.

Since leaving office on January 21, Pence has been flying with his wife, Karen, back to Indiana, although they also have a home in Northern Virginia. Pence opened a transition office there in February.

Pence has also launched a new advocacy group and is working on an autobiography, which is expected to be released in 2023. He is expected to deliver his first public speech since leaving office in South Carolina next month, according to The Associated Press.
