The New York Mets won their home team on Thursday, a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins at Citi Field.

But controversy includes the end of the game.

Outfielder Michael Conforto finished ninth in the winning run when he was hit on the elbow with a pitch while the base was loaded.

The problem is that the field was a strike and that Conforto had to be set up. By ESPN:

Home plate referee Ron Kulpa initially started calling Conforto with strike three. The referee’s crew granted the call, but Kulpa’s decision exists. Under the recurrence rules, a call about whether a pitch is in the striking zone when it touches a batter and whether the batter tries not to touch can not be reviewed.

As you would expect, former WFAN host Mike Francesa, who expressed dissatisfaction with Twitter.

How can the game end like this? Marlins is robbed. Baseball is lost as a sport. Rules and repetition are ridiculous.

According to ESPN, “After the match, Kulpa admitted in the pool report that he had made the wrong call and said: ‘The man was hit by the field in the strike. I should have called him. ‘”
