Mikaela Shiffrin wins joint gold for 6th world title

Mikaela Shiffrin won the joint ladies to set an American record with her sixth world championship.

Shiffrin has four golds in slalom and one in Super-G from previous worlds.

Shiffrin finished third after the super-G section, but was the fastest in the slalom leg to beat Petra Vlhova of Slovakia by 0.86 seconds. Olympic champion Michelle Gisin of Switzerland finished 0.89 behind for bronze.

Two of Shiffrin’s main competitors were unable to complete their slalom runs.

The first leader, Federica Brignone, spanned the third gate while Italy waited for this year’s worlds after five meetings on its first medal. Defending champion Wendy Holdener of Switzerland also shot out early in her run.

Skiers with a lower position still came in the running.
