Forget concrete and steel – Mighty Buildings uses robots and 3D printers to build a $ 15 million community in California.

Mighty Buildings, a construction technology company, specializes in 3D-printed homes of various sizes and offers a solution to technology advancement that can handle issues such as the housing crisis and sustainability. And so far, this formula has found the company’s success: last month, Mighty Buildings raised $ 40 million in a Series B series.

The California-based company is not the first or only company to benefit from this growing 3D printing technology. But unlike other companies, the upcoming Mighty Building project in Rancho Mirage, California, will have the title, according to the manufacturer, as ‘the world’s first planned community of 3D-printed homes’.

“This will be the first practical realization of our vision for the future of housing – which can be deployed quickly, affordably, sustainably and expand surrounding communities with positive dynamics,” said Alexey Dubov, co-founder and COO of Mighty Buildings, in said a press release.

To create this first-class community, Mighty Buildings partnered with the development-oriented Palari Group, a working relationship that began in September 2020 for the first time from other real estate designs.

In December last year, Palari Group officially ordered Mighty’s “Cinco” models for the Rancho Mirage, California housing development.

Rancho Mirage may not be Los Angeles or San Francisco, but this southern California location has its advantages. The city – according to Mighty Buildings – known as ‘the playground of the presidents’, is located in the Coachella Valley, which Sam Ruben, the company’s chief sustainability officer, calls ‘one of the hubs of modern design’.

The technological development of housing will consist of 15 houses over five hectares. This $ 15 million project will be built using the Mighty Kit system, which uses front panel panels to create custom homes.

Through this system the days of concrete are over. Instead, the homes will be based on Mighty Building’s 3D-printed own light stone material, which according to the company determines its shape on exposure to UV light. The printers also rely on ‘robotization’ and ‘robot arm’, the latter for functions such as quality control, Ruben told Insider in an email interview.

The use of this construction method has several sustainability, speed and cost advantages. Similar to the general prefabricated home industry, Mighty Building’s 3D printing process allows homebuilders to create units in a faster and 40% cheaper way, while reducing construction waste by 99%, according to Ruben.

What will the houses include?

The 3D-printed houses will not look different from a traditional modern house from the middle of the century.

The 1,450-square-foot homes – which will be placed on 10,000 square feet of land – have three bedrooms and two bathrooms. If there is not enough space, the houses will also have a separate unit with two beds and one bath of 700 square meters.

The homes also have a ‘wellness intelligence solution’ that can control life aspects such as air and water quality and circadian lights. According to Ruben, this integration of smart technology creates a comfortable and sustainable life experience by using only energy when needed.

Along with this environmentally friendly trend, homes will have ‘zero net energy’, depending on solar power and optional Tesla Powerwall batteries for power. Chargers for electric cars are also optional.

“The project aims to reduce its environmental impact and provide smart and healthy homes to buyers with a sustainability attitude,” Mighty Buildings wrote in a press release.

The development will be completed next spring, and Mighty Buildings is already in talks with a “number of developers” for potential future communities.
