Mid-Michigan becomes country’s leading COVID-19 hotspot as cases increase

Midland County recorded 67 new COVID-19 cases and one new death on Friday, as central Michigan is fast becoming the country’s pandemic hotspot.

On Friday, information gathered by the New York Times put Midland fourth in the country on a list of cities where the COVID rate is rising the fastest. That’s a drop from two places since Thursday, though three of the top five cities are all in the central Michigan region, with Bay City fifth and Mount Pleasant first in the country.

Of the top 10 cities listed by the Times, eight are in Michigan.

Midland was also 17th in a list of cities with the most new cases relative to their population in the past two weeks.


Friday 9 April COVID-19 numbers:

• Midland County: 67 cases have been added. The total of the pandemic is 5,431 cases, 644 probable, 69 deaths and three probable deaths.

• Bay County: 95 cases and one probable death were added; The total pandemic stands at 8,516 cases, 497 probable, 297 fatalities and 13 probable fatalities.

• Gladwin County: 21 cases added; The total pandemic stands at 1,527 cases, 313 probable, 40 deaths and three probable deaths.

• Isabella County: 79 cases have been added; The total pandemic stands at 4,307 cases, 670 probable, 77 deaths and 1 probable death.

• Saginaw County: 160 cases have been added; The total pandemic stands at 16,373 cases, 863 probable, 526 deaths and 14 probable deaths.

On Friday, the state added 7,834 new cases and 26 deaths. Overall, Michigan is at 731,131 cases and 16,426 deaths.

Test

The state report shows as of Friday, Midland County conducted 66,361 COVID-19 tests. Gladwin County is listed as 18,748 Tests.

Midland County’s seven-day positive rate on April 5 was 16.3% and Gladwin County’s 21.3%. Our region with 12 provinces is at 21.2% and Michigan at 17.7%.

MidMichigan Health Statistics

As of Thursday, the MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland indicated they have 89% bed, with 26 COVID-19 patients and 6 in the ICU. MidMichigan Medical Center in Gladwin had a 26% bed, with 1 COVID-19 patient and no one in the ICU.

In terms of PPE supplies, Midland Hospital reported 15-30 days for N95 masks; 15-30 days for surgical masks; 30 plus days for surgical gowns; 15-30 days for exam gloves and 30 plus days for eye protection from Monday. Gladwin Hospital reported more than 30 days for all of the above supplies.
