Microsoft’s new FPS Boost mode for Xbox Series X and S could double frame rates in games

Microsoft launches new FPS Boost feature for its latest Xbox Series X and Series S consoles designed to make existing games work better. While Microsoft previously focused on improving frame rates with backward compatibility for its latest Xbox consoles, FPS Boost is specifically designed to enhance older games without the need for developers to do extra work.

Some games will nearly double frame rates, and Microsoft says it has seen some instances in which backward-compatible titles even double the frame rates. The first games that support FPS Boost are Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Languages, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, en Watchdogs 2. The improvements vary between games, with New Super Lucky’s Languages now runs up to 120 fps, and UFC 4 contains 60 fps display on the Xbox Series S specifically.

Games that work with FPS Boost will include a new indicator when you press the Xbox button on an controller, just as the Quick Resume or Auto HDR indicators appear on Xbox Series X and S consoles today.

“This is just the beginning,” explains Paul Eng, a senior program manager at Xbox. “We will soon be releasing and releasing more titles with FPS Boost, while we introduce new menu icons and system settings in an upcoming system update.” This new dashboard update will arrive in the spring and includes the ability to enable association options for games. You will be able to disable automatic HDR or turn this new FPS Boost feature on and off to really see the impact it offers or simply play games in their original form.

Microsoft will soon launch FPS Boost with this new dashboard update. Although the initial list is rather limited, Microsoft says it plans to announce more games that support FPS Boost in the coming months.
