Microsoft last year revamped its Remote Desktop application for Android, complete with a new version engine, support for Windows 10 virtual desktops and more. Microsoft has now released a major update, this time focusing on Chromebooks and other devices with physical keyboards.

Microsoft Remote Desktop v10.0.9 is now launching in the Play Store, with the most notable change being support in dark mode. If your system theme is dark, the interface and settings panel will not blind you, but will change the appearance of the remote desktop.

There are also some major improvements that Chromebooks will mostly benefit from. Remote Desktop is now originally compliant for x86_64 processors, so most Chromebooks with Intel and AMD can see improved performance. Clipboard synchronization, DEL key support and some other errors have also been fixed. The full list of changes is below.

What’s new

  • Dark mode support on Android 10 and later.
  • Native x86 / x64 support for Chromebooks.
  • Sync issues for clipboard redirects have been fixed.
  • Refreshment of the clipboard has been added / modified at the UI.
  • Supports the DEL key on external keyboards.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the workspace URL to complete automatically.
  • Accessibility issues related to the keyboard and screen reader.
  • Reliability issues identified through accident reporting were addressed.

This update raises the minimum required Android version to v7.0 Nougat, leaving some older devices behind. Microsoft has been steadily increasing system requirements over the past few months – v10.0.9.1114 has been working on Android 6.0 since December, and July’s v10.0.8.1088 update was the last version to support Android 4.0.
