Microsoft releases new all-in-one Office app for iPads

Microsoft released an all-in-one Office app for iPads yesterday, bringing a new approach to Office on mobile devices previously seen on iOS and Android to iPadOS. The app combines Word, Excel, PowerPoint and a number of specific mobile devices, including PDF management tools and a file browser.

A year ago, almost to the day, Microsoft introduced this update to iPhones and Android phones, and the update also appears on some Android tablets. As an iPhone app, it used to run on iPads, but only in a window. This new version has a full-screen tablet interface and supports various iPad multitasking features.

Users can still download individual Word, Excel or PowerPoint apps in the iPad App Store; the standalone apps and this all-in-one option probably seem to be together for at least a while, as the standalone alternatives have not disappeared on the iPhone.

In addition to making the work between the three productivity apps a little smoother, the app’s main value proposition is also the “Actions” panel. It gives users access to quick icons to transfer files between devices, convert images to text or tables, draw or scan PDFs, convert PDFs to word, scan QR codes and do a few other things . The full list is shown in the gallery above.

Users have access to files stored locally on the device, in the cloud via OneDrive or in iCloud.

The app can be downloaded for free from the App Store today, but it requires a Microsoft 365 subscription to access all features.

IPad maker Apple has made significant software and hardware changes to make the iPad a viable replacement, including the tweaking of iOS into a new iPad-specific version called iPadOS. In our reviews of iPadOS, we have found that the operating system is functional and sometimes even exceptional, but there are still many frustrations.

Apple is expected to launch a new iPad Pro in the next few months, and the company could potentially add more productivity features to the hardware update.
