The “Restore this computer” option has long provided users with a quick and easy way to restore their computer to factory settings. But since the release of Windows 10 version 1607, users have been complaining that the feature does not work, with the message “There was a problem repairing your computer. No changes have been made”.

Now Microsoft has finally solved the problem. The company released the KB4598479 update as part of the first Patch Tuesday of 2021.

The patch is described as a ‘service stack update’, and applies to versions 1903 and 1909 of Windows 10. The update fixes a bug introduced by a previous patch. The KB4524244 update caused problems when users tried to repair their computers, and Microsoft later pulled this update.

As for the newly released KB4598479, Microsoft does not provide much information about the update on its support page, and simply says:

This update makes improvements to the service stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Service stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable service stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

You can grab KB4598479 via Windows Update to resolve the issue with the “Restore this computer” feature. If for some reason you are unable to do so, you can remove the KB4524244 update as a solution.
