Microsoft raises 250GB OneDrive file size limit

Microsoft has increased the upload file size of its OneDrive file storage service to 250 GB, compared to the previous limit of 100 GB, the company announced.

Microsoft has explained that the change is not limited to business and school users – anyone using OneDrive can now use the new 250 GB file size for uploading things like video albums and large files.

The company says it has managed to increase the upload limit by dividing each file into pieces, with each piece encrypted with a unique key. In addition, synchronization of large files is optimized using differential synchronization, which uploads only the changes that users make to the saved file.

Support for the new 250 GB file size will begin by the end of January, and Microsoft expects the new limit to have general availability by the end of this quarter.
