Microsoft Flight Simulator launches real-time snow in happy New Year message

The year begins snow in Microsoft Flight Simulator thanks to the new real-time snow update.

Welcome to 2021. We really hope that this year will start a little better than last year, and so will Microsoft and Asobo Studio, manufacturers of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

In a video message released today, the developers wished all their virtual pilots a prosperous new year and also promised to make Microsoft Flight Simulator the best platform it could possibly be. And along with the festive message comes an even more festive update that offers MS Flight Simulator a certain majesty.

The “Let It Snow” does exactly what it says: real-time snow effects are now a standard feature for flying in northern latitudes where it is currently winter time. To showcase the new climate effects, the trailer starts with a Cessna flying next to Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau, Germany. The ground is covered with fresh powder, while other scenes from around the world show a frozen, wintry landscape, including frozen lakes and oceans.

As with other weather effects in Microsoft Simulator, snow is updated in real-time based on where the player is flying. Fly over the Norwegian fjords and see a coastline covered with white and ice-covered lakes dotting the landscapes. Fly inside the Alps and experience snow-covered caps and chips filled with powder from the comfortable air-conditioned cabin of your aircraft.

Microsoft Flight Simulator recently received VR support so you can experience snow-capped mountains using Oculus, Valve, HTC or Windows Mixed Reality headsets. In addition, the developers have revealed a number of interesting facts about Microsoft Flight Simulator, including that the game has just surpassed 2 million users who flew 50 million separate flight plans.

MS Flight Simulator is now available on PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. A console version is planned for later in 2021, including the Xbox Series X.
