Microsoft Edge 89 brings vertical tabs and new history view

Microsoft has officially released version 89 of its popular Chromium-based Edge browser, bringing the long-term vertical tab feature to Mac for the first time.

Microsoft Edge vertical tabs

Vertical tabs are intended to utilize screen space more efficiently, and should be a welcome addition for users browsing especially on 16: 9 views. Users can click on vertical tabs to switch between them and group optional tabs together.

“To facilitate the management of the tab and its organization, vertical tabs are now widely available this month,” Microsoft’s VP Liat Ben-Zur said in a company blog. “Everyone can now view and manage their tab pages with a single click from a window on the side. This allows you to clearly see the tab titles and controls, making it easier to find and switch between the tabs you need, no matter how much you have open. ‘

Edge users can switch between horizontal and vertical tabs by clicking on the new “Vertical tabs on / off” icon on the far left of the tab row. By default, vertical tabs are displayed as icons unless moved with the mouse pointer, but the extended window can also be pinned to the left of the browser window so that the title of each page remains visible.

In addition to vertical tabs, Edge now includes a new way to view browser history. If users now go to the history, it will open as a lightweight drop-down list from the toolbar instead of opening the full page view in the settings. The idea is that it enables users to easily search, open and manage their history without navigating away. For users who prefer the original style, this drop-down list can also be pinned to the right side of the browser window as a window.

Microsoft Edge has won many users with its regular feature updates and the close integration of Microsoft’s design language with the macOS design signature. The last major update took place in January and introduced several new features including ‘sleep tabs’ from the system resources, a password generator and monitor, new visual themes and more.

The browser can be downloaded from the Microsoft Edge website.
