Microsoft Converts Sustainability Report to Minecraft Map

Microsoft today released its annual sustainability report, and Minecraft developer Mojang decided to turn it into something interactive. Simply called “Sustainable City”, the new Minecraft card is available as a free download in the Minecraft marketplace, and it’s also added to the game’s educational offshoot.

The map contains six included lessons, which, according to Mojang, are “designed to give students a sense of stewardship for the planet.” The lessons cover topics such as sustainable food production, outflow and treatment of water, and responsible forestry. One lesson gives players the task of discovering a home built entirely of sustainable materials; another one has to take them to a landfill to learn what happens to non-recyclable materials.

The educational version of Minecraft has been around since 2016, but it has become especially popular due to the increase in distance education. At present, Microsoft says more than 35 million students and educators have a license to use the platform.
