Microsoft has announced that there will be some major changes to Windows 10, including an Auto HDR feature, new File Explorer UI, and customization of virtual desktops. The Auto HDR preview is available for PC today and supports more than 1000 DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games.
The new Auto HDR feature, according to Microsoft, will be similar to the one found on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, and offers support for a high dynamic range (as long as you have an HDR-compatible monitor).

“While some game studios are developing for HDR game consoles by mastering their games for HDR, of course, Auto HDR for computers will only use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 SDR games and expand the color / brightness range to HDR,” Microsoft said in a blog post. ‘This is a seamless platform feature that will give you a great new gaming experience that takes full advantage of the capabilities of your HDR monitor. The Auto in the title implies how easy it is for you to enable the feature; a simple setting switch allows you to turn the function on and off. ‘
Microsoft has said it is collecting user feedback for Auto HDR on Windows 10 in an effort to refine the feature before introducing it to anyone. The company is already optimizing performance and even adding customization options. It also works to better identify which DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles will support Auto HDR.

In addition to Auto HDR for PC, Microsoft is also introducing new features to Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21337. One is a new File Explorer layout that adds additional padding to the standard option, and another layout that adds more information. There’s a setting in View Options called ‘Use compact mode’, which will give users the classic layout of File Explorer.

Microsoft also provides enhanced control and customization to virtual desktops. You can now rearrange and customize the wallpapers for each of your virtual desktops – features that users have been requesting for a while.
There are other features included in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21337, such as an updated Notepad icon and news that the app will be updated via the Microsoft Store instead of major OS updates. Windows Terminal and Power Automate Desktop are also built inbox programs.
