(WXYZ) – The University of Michigan is canceling operations to accelerate COVID-19 admissions rapidly.
Justin Dimick, the professor and chairman of Michigan Surgery, said the entire state is at high risk.
Dimick asked the state for help because no new restrictions were announced amid Michigan’s increase in COVID-19 cases.
Michigan Medicine also released the following statement:
“Similar to many state and subway health systems, Michigan Medicine experienced a high volume of emergencies and admissions for both COVID and non-COVID care this week, resulting in very high hospital occupancy due to rising occupancy. and predictions for continued high Michigan Medicine had to make the difficult decision to reschedule a small number of scheduled surgeries late this week and next week in order to maintain safe occupancy levels.We are monitoring the ongoing situation and will make further adjustments to ensure scheduling matches our staff and availability of hospital rooms, and that the safety of our patients and staff always remains our highest priority. ‘

Michigan has reported thousands of new cases a day in the past week, and there are now more than 100,000 active cases of the virus in Michigan, the highest since mid-November when a partial strike was announced.
Hospitalizations in Michigan for COVID-19 have cut across all states, rising 360 percent since Feb. 28, according to the Department of Health and Human Services in Michigan.
As COVID hospitalizations in Michigan rise, ICUs in several regions are approaching according to new data.
In addition, the percentage of beds occupied by COVID-19 has increased by 203% since 28 February. Currently 11.9% of the beds are used; trends for COVID-19 hospitalizations are increasing, officials say.
The current COVID-19 positivity rate is the highest since April 24, 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.
The percentage of positivity has increased by 348% and the fall rates have risen by 375% since the previous low on 19 February. Currently, the rate stands at 15.6%.
Michigan has the highest number of cases and the highest number of cases across the country in the past seven days.
