Michigan Covid: More than 8,400 new cases of coronavirus were reported in one day, most since December

The daily number of cases on Saturday is the highest the state has reported since Dec. 7, when the number counted was 9,350.

Just eight weeks ago, the state’s data showed that the number of cases reported daily was as low as 563 cases.

“I think it was a wake-up call for everyone yesterday when Michigan reported 8,400 new cases, and we are now seeing an increasing number of serious illnesses, ICU hospitalizations, in individuals between the ages of 30 and 50 who have not been vaccinated,” Osterholm said Sunday. said on NBC’s “Meet the Press”.

Osterholm said there has been a surge in cases over the past year in cases moving between U.S. regions, starting in the Upper Midwest and Northeast, then declining and moving to the southern solar region, which then subsides and returns to the original regions. .

Some Americans are acting like the pandemic is over. It is not

Michigan also reported 57 Covid-19 deaths on Saturday, while 51 of the deaths were identified during a major review record the state does three times a week, the health department said. The state has recorded 9,947 deaths in Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

In the first three weeks of March, hospitalizations due to Covid-19 increased by 633% for people who did not vaccinate between the ages of 30-39 and 800% for those aged 40-49, according to Michigan Health and Hospital Association.
Dr. Justin Skrzynski, a Covid hospital for Beaumont Health in Royal Oak, Michigan, said a random sample of the Covid-19 tests in the state sent for DNA analysis indicated a worrying sign – a sharp increase in the variant first found in the UK, which experts say could be more contagious and possibly more deadly.
More than 12,500 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant have been reported across the United States, including more than 1,200 in Michigan, according to CDC data.

Michigan has the second highest number of cases of the variant, after Florida.

“Right now, the usual Covid test is showing what we do only for Covid / no Covid. But we send a lot of those to the state, and we see something like 40% of our patients now with B.1.1.7,” he told CNN’s Miguel Marquez.
