(WXYZ) – The state of Michigan is considering prioritizing different groups for the COVID-19 vaccine.
The State Department of Health and Human Services said it would consider giving priority to:
• Workers in places where there have been many transfers and / or outbreaks.
• Workers at increased risk for serious illness due to age or underlying medical conditions.
MDHHS says vaccine providers across the state have worked hard to speed up vaccinations to help the state achieve its goal of vaccinating 70% of Michiganders 16 and older.
The state follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for prioritizing the distribution of vaccines. The CDC’s recommendations are based on input from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
MDHHS says priorities may change as more information on vaccine efficacy and additional vaccination products becomes available.
The timing of the onset of vaccination in a phase depends on the guidance of CDC or ACIP, the vaccine supply from the manufacturer, how the vaccine is administered from the federal level to Michigan, and the ability to deliver the vaccine to the population. . As Michigan gets additional vaccines, MDHHS will be able to speed up the process and reach priority groups faster.
Under-prioritization of essential workers in the front line is necessary due to the limited vaccine supply per MDHHS.
Michigan has the capacity to vaccinate up to 80,000 people a day, but the supply of COVID-19 doses remains limited, reports the Associated Press.
